Birthers [10 Aug 2009|09:08am]

megatexas
Ran into some birthers this weekend. Some people I know at the coffee shop. I walked by and heard "A certificate of live birth is not the same as a birth certificate."

There's only one sort of conversation that produces that statement.

So I asked them, let's say it's true. I don't care. It's true. He's a foreigner. What now?

Well, he steps down and we have new elections.

I told them that was funny, because we just went through eight years of a disputed presidency and we never got new elections, so that's not so likely. So, does it go to Biden?

It goes to Biden for a few months, they said, then there's new elections. According to the Constitution he can't be president, so there's a do-over.

Well, according to the Constitution he's one-half two-thirds of a person, so I don't think that should be the biggest priority. But whatever, let's say somehow we get new elections. I guess we have to vet the candidates. What about McCain? He was born in Panama.

One of them tried to argue for McCain, but the other shushed him. Even he could see you can't have it both ways there.

So theoretically they would have been protesting McCain just like this. They didn't mind this idea, they thought it was funny. They hate McCain and said Bush was an idiot.

"So I have to ask," I said, "does the symbolism of impeaching the first black President because of where he was born bother you at all?"

"No." "No, not a bit. I hate the guy."

Okay then. Those were all my questions.

Both these gentlemen, by the way, are older white males who work in the "justice" system, I believe in the prison system.

They didn't like the term "birther," either, but allowed as it was in common usage.

After that the conversation veered into whether or not Sotomayor was a racist and I got the heck out of there.

I do not understand these people's priorities, to say the least. I also do not see how these old white folk are so threatened by health care.

Termi-Nation: 25 Years On We, How The Horror of Reaganomics Was Reflected In The Film [26 Feb 2009|10:35am]

Termi-Nation

This is a really well researched piece, which I thought might be of interest:

Termi-Nation: 25 Years On We, How The Horror of Reaganomics Was Reflected In The Film

By Michael Murano / Special To SuicideGirls.com

We're living in a cultural landscape thicketed with old-growth 1980s, and the return of one of the most iconic '80s artifacts is about the rain down like fallout. The metal endo-skeletoned man/machine was the embodiment of a specific vintage of berserk, apocalyptic terror that defined the years of the Reagan/Bush Junta.

The Terminator is now recognized as a historical artifact, The Library of Congress having placed it in the National Film Registry.

The Terminator is a work of cultural, historic, and aesthetic significance. But more than that, it's an important artifact of a once ubiquitous psychological reality, especially for geezers like me who thought that our beloved, doddering, Teflon-coated Unca Ronnie was gonna get us vaporized....

lame duck lesgialation makes the leveling of appalachia even easier [18 Feb 2009|07:29am]

The Appalachian mountains are the oldest mountain range in the world [which is why they're not as outwardly impressive as younger, taller mountains] and as a result, they are also home to some of the most richly biodiverse ecosystems in the world.

Mountaintop removal mining first started during the mid nineties as a way to technically comply with the Clean Air Act, in which regulations on sulfur emissions drove coal companies to look for ever more efficient means to extract the deepest pockets of low sulphur [bituminous] coal which would comply with the regulations. Ironically, it's a perfect example of that old cliche "cutting off one's nose to save one's face" - or rather, destroying the land, water, culture, AND air.. to reduce one single carcinogen [out of hundreds!]

The results are nothing less than disastrous, from cradle to grave:

Please feel free to copy and paste this post, and don't forget to check out the following websites for groups which organize around the resistance to the leveling of Appalachia.

JPMorgan Chase buys WaMu assets after FDIC seizure [26 Sep 2008|10:48am]

revolutionnow05
The nation’s financial crisis has intensified as federal regulators seized Washington Mutual on Thursday in what is the largest bank failure in American history. Federal regulators have arranged to sell off most of the bank at a bargain rate to JPMorgan Chase.

In the wake of Wall Street's overhaul, Bank of America Corp. is on track be the nation's largest bank by assets once its acquisition of brokerage Merrill Lynch & Co. is completed. JPMorgan Chase & Co. will be close in total assets to Citigroup Inc., at just above $2 trillion, after the WaMu buy.

A friend of mine from Santa Cruz managed to fly out to the DNC with a film crew to get coverage on the event and managed to get some good protest footage that she had edited into a pretty cool video. She's working on a series of documentaries and her first footage is primarily based on the DNC.

Urgent - call in day TODAY! 9/17/2008 [17 Sep 2008|12:30pm]

Hey everyone - I am just passing this message along for some friends.  If even 1/3 of the members of this group convinced 2 other people to call in, that would be a significant enough number of phone calls to stall this horrible bill in its tracks.  Please please please pass it on - post it in your journal, other communities, and email it to all of your list serves.

The nuclear industry in the U.S is proposing more than 30 new reactors - with an estimated cost of 6.2-12 BILLION USD per reactor. (SOURCE: nirs.org/neconomics/nuclearsubsidies2008.pdf )
Not only is Nuclear power is a FALSE solution to the issue of global climate change, but it's intrinsically tied to the nuclear arms industry.
For inspiration on viable solutions, check out www.kilowattours.org/

As a resident of a gulf state, I also hope that folks will oppose off-shore drilling.  BUT... the mainstream media is devoting NO attention to the nuclear aspect of this bill, which is quite frankly frightening.  Not too much of a surprise, though - considering that many of the more common outlets are owned by General Electric, which is the most profitable nuclear arms manufacturer in the world.

GANG OF 10 BILL:
BIGGEST GIVEAWAY TO NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY EVER

NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

This is it. In the mainstream media, the Gang of 10 (actually, now it's the Gang of 20) energy bill is all about offshore oil drilling. And, to be sure, there's lots of that in the bill, which is expected to come up in the Senate late next week. But the bill would also be the biggest giveaway to the nuclear power industry ever.

Unlimited loan guarantees for construction of new atomic reactors. That's right, unlimited. As much money—hundreds of billions of dollars--as everyone in the nuclear industry wants, when it wants, for as long as it wants.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you how that would absolutely destroy our ability to effectively address the climate crisis and what a disaster that would be for our economy, for our nation, for our planet.

How do these Senators think they can get away with this? Because they're not hearing from enough of us, often enough. They think this is a popular stand. We all need to stand up now and be counted.

That's why NIRS, Physicians for Social Responsibility and other national groups are putting out the word for a National Call-In Day to the Senate on Wednesday, September 17. We need at least 10,000 phone calls to the Senate on Wednesday. We need the phones there to be ringing non-stop from dawn to dusk. Will you help?

Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121

*Please call both of your Senators that day with a very simple message: Take taxpayer loan guarantees for nuclear power out of the Gang of 20 energy bill. (note: the bill does not yet have a number. It's called the New Energy Reform Act of 2008, but everyone will know what you are talking about if you just say 'Gang of 20 energy bill.')

*Please forward this Alert to any and all of your mailing lists.

*Please print this Alert and take it to any public meetings and gather places you go to between now and Wednesday. Post it at food co-ops and other central locations.

*Please talk to your friends and colleagues, congregations this Sunday, PTAs next week. Spread the word.

*If you want to e-mail your Senators, please do (you can do so from this link; NIRS' new e-mail-from- our-Alerts set-up still has some bugs,so we can't quite offer that yet). But also call! It is important to keep those phones ringing all day long!

*Call even if you think your Senator(s) are hopeless. Everyone walking in the halls of the Senate should hear phones ringing everywhere, all day long.

We can't let the nuclear industry get away with this. All that can stop it now are your actions. If we all just sit back and wait for someone else to take action, we will lose. If we all make those two calls—one to each Senator, and ask each of our friends and colleagues to make those two calls, we can show the Senate what the American people really think. And we can win.

It is up to each of us. It's that simple, and that stark.

Please take five minutes to make two phone calls Wednesday. And please drop us an e-mail and let us know you called (we'll be looking for 10,000e-mails in our inbox by Thursday morning!).

Thank you for all that you do.

P.S. For those who want more information:

You can read a Physicians for Social Responsibility analysis of the nuclear provisions in the Gang of 20 energy bill here. The bill includes not just loan guarantees, but also more 'risk insurance' for new nukes, construction of a reprocessing plant, and much more.

You can read a longer article on the issue I wrote for DailyKos here.

Karl Rove Left the Country! [13 Jul 2008|11:01am]

The Raw Story

Infowars

So far these are the only two sources I can find that is reporting on this news.

After refusing to testify before congress and claiming "executive privilege" (which was later voted down 7-1) Karl Rove decides to suddenly leave the country on a "long planned trip".....ugh yeah right...like that just slipped his (or his lawyers) mind? Bullshit!

Conyers has given him 5 days to comply before taking "all other appropriate recourse"

So is he just buying time before he can create another lie or did he leave for good knowing he has to take his secrets to the grave?

This intrigues me and makes me mad enough to spit!

Supreme Court Restores Rule Of Law To Guantánamo [12 Jun 2008|11:14am]

Decision Represents Beginning Of End Of Failed Detention Policy, Says ACLU

NEW YORK - In a stunning blow to the Bush administration's failed national security policies, the Supreme Court ruled today 5-4 that the U.S. Constitution applies to the government's detention policies at Guantánamo. The Court concluded that detainees held at Guantánamo have a right to challenge their detention through habeas corpus.

The following can be attributed to Steven R. Shapiro, Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union:

"Today's decision forcefully repudiates the essential lawlessness of the Bush administration's failed Guantánamo policy. It should also mark the beginning of the end of the military commission process, which permits the use of coerced evidence and hearsay and thus cannot survive the constitutional scrutiny that today's decision demands. It is time to close Guantánamo, end indefinite detention without charge and restore the rule of law."

What Does Hillary Want? [04 Jun 2008|11:06am]

1punky4u
The presidancy. She wont concede, she will not accept that Obama Has out classed her. He out preformed her. His message had more appeal.

After he had the delegate count last night. After the writing on the wall was carved in...

She failed to bow out gracefully, se failed to heal the rift in the party that She and her campaign help to create.

What did she do? She said she was happy to have stayed the course. She said she will consider her options and move on... she spoke as if she could still win.

She sounded more like BUSH than anything else.

If she can't be president, she wants to destroy the party.

I fear she will run a third party ticket, or stay available for write in ballots.

I fear her hunger for power will hand the election to the republicans and we will all pay dearly for her foly.

From David Hyde, Professor of Sociology, South Puget Sound Community College

Each year for the last five years on the anniversary of the official start of the Iraq war I’ve sent out an update with various facts and statistics to remind us of the events too often omitted in discussion by the press and our political leaders. While President Bush has today tried to paint a positive picture of the situation in Iraq , I’m skeptical of trying to put an optimistic spin on war. In Oklahoma we used to call it “putting a pig in party dress.” With the exception of this introduction, I’ve attempted to present just the facts themselves and leave opinions out. Let’s all hope this is the last of these emails I’ll have to write. The Iraq war 5 years inCollapse )

Americans are asking for Political Asylum...Why don't we hear about it?

There is no country in the world that understands propaganda more than the United States. Billions are spent at the Pentagon on what you hear and repeat. The mainstream news is a psychotronic parade as the democrats bumble and the reporters comment as though they are on the Bush administration payroll.

The truth is not reported. The public responds as a story of importance makes breaking news only to see it squashed in the next 72 hours. Americans are asking for political asylum and you are not hearing about it.

The government is torturing American citizens who are Whistleblowers-  myspace Darren Gelbard, youtube Monarch Katherine Moore, and DIA Topoff to see electronic warfare torturing a U.S. citizen in 2007. Or, for those of you who think these victims are conspiracy theorists, there are the ADS military tests on youtube, 60 Minutes, and CNN. People being hit out of thin air by a ray beam. For real!

Weapons that can harm or kill you from a distance, without leaving marks if the operator so desires, are being used on people in their homes. There are interviews with U.S. citizens who are victims and with a Baghdad surgeon in which he states there are bodies in Iraq he and his team of ten Doctors have seen that are being killed by..."No bullets, no shots..arms cut straight off...we don't know what kind of weapon it is." A Baghdad Orchestra player also stated he saw bodies where..."Only the face was burned, no eyes..and the teeth. The rest of the body was untouched.

The Washington Post released an article called Mind Games in which the victims of psychotronics and V2K described what it was like to have someone mentally and physically torture you using communications and electronic warfare from a distance. And Russia is trying to ban Space weapons after Congress changed the bill that would have banned psychotronics years ago. This is the most dangerous game. Weapons that no individual can defend themselves against. Weapons that manipulate people and that torture and can kill you in your home with no warning from a distance.
